Church of St.Biagio

The first Church of San Biagio already existed in Monza in 1141 in the time of Pope Innocent II.

After having been placed under the jurisdiction of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist by Pope Alexander III in 1169, the church became parochial upon St. Charles Borromeo’s decision.

A massive restoration by the architect Pietro Jacopo Antonietti from Monza dates back to 1746.

The fate of the first Church of San Biagio rapidly changed at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1928 the Archbishop Cardinal Eugenio Tosi had expressed the need to build a new church.

The Second World War made the structure of the sacred building instable.

Cardinal Tosi's request was followed out between 1965 and 1968. The new church - designed by the architect Luigi Caccia Dominioni - was built near the old one. On the 26th February 1977 the old church whose structures had already become weak suddenly collapsed forcing authorities to decide on its complete demolition.
